Norton Music Proudly Presents:

Roy Hawkesford User Style and
Arrangement (Fake) Disk #7
For Band-in-a-Box

Classic Rock'n'Roll, plus...

29 Styles and 70 Arrangements

In many ways this disk complements Roy's earlier Disks 4 (Classic Soul and R&B) and 5 (Classic Ballads), in that it includes many styles from the '50s and '60s that were not represented in the former disk or that add to an incomplete series of styles by individual artists.

For this reason there is a further Beatles style, two more Sam & Dave (i.e. Booker T & The MGs), a Stevie Wonder (with brushes), a Lee Dorsey, a James Brown, and another Tamla Motown style. The rest of the disk contains many styles that are typical of the Rock'n'Roll period from the early '50s through to the early '60s - from the blues and jazz based jump jive of Louis Prima to the pop ballads of Roy Orbison.

There are many classic Rock'n'Roll songs that work well with the Fats Domino, Elvis Presley, Louis Prima and Chuck Berry styles that are included. It can be fun to play some of the well-known songs with quite different styles - which is precisely what Fats Domino and Louis Prima did with the old jazz standards!

Roy has also fulfilled an ambition to include many more styles by artists and bands that made instrumental hits. Most of these will have a wider application than the arrangements that accompany them. Some, like ~SURFARI and ~SAMSHAM, really only work with one particular tune, but he decided to include them anyway!

The Shadows will not be well-known in the USA, but their sound is similar in many ways to The (better known) Ventures; if you don't know their recordings, it is worth trying to create your own melodies over the song arrangements. The rest of the instrumental styles (Duane Eddy, in particular) and the complementary arrangements should be familiar to most people.

In addition, there are a few styles, like ~BLUBEAT (relaxed Blue Beat), that were popular in the early '60s and which still have a lot of charm and potential. This is also true of the superficially simple Drifters style that complements the classic "On Broadway".

Finally, Roy has tried to make all of the arrangements on the disk as faithful as possible to the original recordings. When you listen to Roy Orbison's classic ballads you aren't immediately aware that their structures are completely irregular and nothing like the typical fake book versions! Check them out.

Here are the 29 great new styles contained on this disk:

And the 70 arrangements (songs) on this disk are:

(Dance With The) Guitar Man • Ain't That A Shame • All Shook Up • Blue Angel • Blue Christmas • Blue Monday • Blueberry Hill • Caravan • Carry That Weight • Chantilly Lace • Crazy • Dancing In The Street • Don't Be Cruel • El Cumbanchero • Falling • Get Out My Life, Woman • Good Golly Miss Molly • Great Balls Of Fire • Harlem Nocturne • Hava Nagila (The Spotnicks) • Heat Wave • Hold Back the Night • I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire • I'll Go Crazy • I'm Hurtin' • I'm In The Mood For Love • In Dreams • It Happened In Monteray • It's Now Or Never • Keep On Running • Let's Dance • Magical Mystery Tour • Man Of Mystery (The Shadows) • Midnight (The Shadows) • Mona Lisa • My Baby Just Cares For Me • My Blue Heaven • My Cherie Amour • No, No • Oh, Marie • On Broadway • Only The Lonely • Parisienne Walkways (Gary Moore) • Rebel Rouser • Return To Sender • Sea Cruise • She's Not You • Sick And Tired • Sleepwalk • So Long • Sweet Soul Music • Telstar (The Tornados) • Tequila • The Cruel Sea (The Dakotas) • The Sheik Of Araby • The Stranger (The Shadows) • Three Nights A week • True Love Ways • Under The Boardwalk • Wheels • When You're Smiling • Why Don't You Try Me • Wipe Out • Wonderful Land (The Shadows) • Wooly Bully • Yeh, Yeh • You Always Hurt The One You Love • You Don't Know Like I Know • You Don't Know What You Mean To Me • You Never Can Tell

(The names in brackets are British, except for The Spotnicks who are Swedish. If you're into late '50s / early '60s instrumental beat music, check them out!)

While most of the styles are transferable to any song in any key, a few complement songs that sport a 'one-off' arrangement.

Note: Roy prefers to use the term arrangement as opposed to fake, but whatever the name it must be noted that these Band-in-a-Box files do not contain melodies or any other copyright material.
